Hello fellow Binghamton University Scholars,

This is Alexis Stecker, Co-President of the BU Scholars. I would like to personally invite you to join in and volunteer your time for the Women’s Initiative Now! (WIN!) event taking place on campus next Wednesday, March 5th. This is a unique, truly meaningful event co-sponsored by The Scholars Program, Hillel, and the Women’s Student Union. Here is your chance to volunteer your time and strive for some real campus activism. The event designed to bring fun, entertainment, and education to the entire BU campus. Numerous organizations will be present, tabling on issues that impact women on both a local and global level and discussing ways to make an impact. Issues include global illiteracy, women’s global health care, abuse, preventing sexual violence and many other important topics. There will be free food and live performances throughout the day.

BUT, in order to make this amazing event successful we need your help. As Binghamton University Scholars I know that each of you are not only intelligent but also have a tremendous capacity to make a real difference. We only request a 1/2 hour of your time on March 5th, but are always appreciative of more. The event takes place officially from 1:00pm – 6:00 pm in the Mandela Room in the Old Union. See below about signing up for a time slot.

We need volunteers for:

-serving delicious food

-setting up

-cleaning up

-decorating

-greeting guests (remember, this is open to the entire campus, bring your friends and your Professors!)

-advertising

-and tabling

PLEASE e-mail me ASAP: Alexis at azstecker@gmail.com to let me know which 1/2 hour time slot you would like. Slots are filling up fast. Help will be needed from 11:00am until 7:30pm. Remember, if you have a few hours to give, that would be wonderful. The more the better. I look forward to hearing from each one of you.

Welcome to the Scholars Program from your 2007-2008 Binghamton Scholars Council.

As Binghamton Scholars, you have been recognized academically as the “best of the best.” I hope you will take full advantage of the leadership opportunities, classes, and community that our program has to offer. Your four years in this program will surely provide many challenges; however, they will also earn you academic recognition, and enable you to construct a roadmap for a successful future.

For those interested in leadership opportunities, the Binghamton Scholars Council welcomes you to run for a council position. These annual elections are held each May. Keep in mind that you do not need to be an officer to help the further expansion and growth of the program. Additionally, as a Scholar you will take a Leadership class and be given the opportunity to design and develop your own community outreach project, serving our own campus or the greater Binghamton area.

The classes that Binghamton Scholars offers exclusively to you are engaging, exciting and thought-provoking. Your communication, analytic, interpersonal, and leadership skills will be strengthened in a friendly and nurturing environment. In addition, these classes will help you forge bonds with other Scholars.

We proudly promote our social functions which are sponsored by the Scholars Program Student Council. Past events have included bowling competitions, pizza parties, ice cream socials, trivia/game nights, and elegant dinners. By taking part in these great events you can further immerse yourself in the Scholars community and create everlasting friendships.

While several perks of the program probably appeal to you, I think you’ll find the Scholars Program’s greatest benefit is that involvement in the program will lead you to incredible career development opportunities. Employers recognize participation in the Scholars Program as evidence that you are the highest caliber student at a highly recognized university.

Be it through unique classroom discussions, fun social activities, or scholars luncheons, we encourage you to take full advantage of all the program has to offer. We always welcome new ideas. All of us on the council encourage your voice and input. Last but not least, congratulations on being recognized as a Binghamton University Scholar! The entire Scholars Council looks forward to meeting you and helping you to make the most of your Binghamton Scholars experience.

Sincerely,
Alexis Stecker and Jonathan Fulop
